Sounding Arches: A Collective AR Soundscape A collective and locative listening event in celebration of World Listening Day. Music for Healing: Forest Bathing // Sound Walk is a free, geolocation-based audio experience by interdisciplinary artist Angelica Olstad, supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council. Using the Echoes app, participants enter the Prospect Park forest to unlock a non-linear, choose-your-own-adventure sound walk inspired by the principles of forest bathing. Healing music, ambient soundscapes, and gentle prompts for journaling, reflection, and meditation appear like hidden “easter eggs” throughout the path, encouraging visitors to slow down, reconnect with nature, and engage with the work in their own way. Designed as an accessible public healing arts offering, the experience activates as soon as participants step into the Prospect Park Forest, inviting calm, rest, and relaxation. A few things to know: - The music track is the main feature of the experience. It will loop as long as you stay in the designated area. Refer to your app to know if you are in the designated sound walk location. If you leave the designated area, the music will stop and when you re-enter the track will re-start from the beginning. - The music track is 1 hour 29 minutes long. You can stay as long or as short as you want. If you want to listen to the piece in its entirety, just find new paths to walk within the designated area. By doing so, you'll be practicing the art of a walking meditation! - The experience can happen with headphones but the recommended experience is playing on a bluetooth speaker so that you can hear the sounds of nature mixed with the music. Please be mindful of a few things: if on a bluetooth, keep the volume at a reasonable so as not to disrupt the walk of other participants. If you are wearing headphones, be aware of your surroundings and others on the paths. - There are easter egg moments embedded in the experience. As soon as you hear the prompt, stop and follow the instructions. Once you leave the designated area the prompt will stop. Again, be mindful or your surroundings. This soundwalk is a sonic exploration through the southern section of Prospect Park, known as "the last forest in Brooklyn". What once was carved by the Wisconsin Glacier has now become a dynamic landscape that has seen periods of vibrancy and decay throughout the park's rich history. The land of what is now the park was first settled by the Canarsee tribe and later colonized by Dutch farmers.The southern section of the park was planned by its creators, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, as an aquatic counterpoint to the open and wooded sections of the park. The area is now a bustling oasis for visitors from all walks of life. The park has a deep history and many in the community have seen the park undergo periods of both growth and decay. This soundwalk is composed primarily using manipulated field recordings of the park superimposed on the space in which they originate from. Every piece seeks to defy expectation. Sounds that might seem organic and natural are in fact synthesized and sounds that appear to be artificial and synthesized are actually recordings from the natural environment. This soundwalk relies heavily on the use of reverb and delay as creative signal processors as they give nods to the history of the park, the many uniquely reverberant structures within the park, and the rich cultural traditions of the communities who live in the areas surrounding the southern section of the park. The soundwalk is informed by the historical evolution of the park but is also very personal as it reflects the uncertain but exciting journey of venturing into a new environment. This walk quotes the poems from Borderland/La Frontera, a book by feminist writer Gloria Anzaldua. Her term, "deslenguadas" takes pride in speaking Spanglish as a hybrid cultural being existing in the Borderland which is a metaphorical space of living in the bridge of two cultures, implicit in language and gender, which always carry class and ethnic/race significance. For her as Chicana, her work exists and oscillates in a constant border-crossing that is implicit in her reading of intersectionality and interdisciplinarity from poetry to non-fictional stories, as well as autobiography that she names as ‘autohistorias’.
