Electric Echoes: A Sonic Argument Between the River Goyt and Stockport Power Station. The river speaks back. Do let us know what your feedback on the SoundWalk via this survey Attune to the River Goyt as it flows and explore the echoes of an industrial past when the river was forced through a vast underground system that fed Stockports Power station. Composed by artist Maya Chowdhry, in collaboration with the local communities of Culture Bridge and the Hong Kong Fellowship, the SoundWalk is a sonic excavation of the river and forces that shape its contemporary form. Listen in as the river guides along its course, through the town’s post-industrial edges, including the tunnels and site of the former Stockport Power Station where the river and the town meet. Using your mobile phone and the Echoes app, you’ll experience site specific sound compositions created in response to the unique history of each location - sonic textures of industrial drones, electrical surges, reverberations of underground tunnels, and the discordant rhythms of the river as it was heated and contracted. The SoundWalk is one half of a sonic argument that unfolds across an interactive installation at Stockport Air Raid Shelters and the walk. While echoes of Stockport’s power station dominate the airwaves at the Shelters, in the SoundWalk the River Goyt has its chance to speak back. A Ladder is Not the Only Kind of Time

A Ladder is Not the Only Kind of Time is an album by the composer Benjamin Tassie. Recorded in Sheffield's historic Rivelin Valley, the album features three new water-powered instruments: a harpsichord, hurdy-gurdy, and hydraulis (or water organ). Powered by the river, the instruments produce sound mechanically. Water-wheels turn to ‘play’ the harpsichord and hurdy-gurdy, while the water organ is sounded as water displaces air within the instrument (a system based on an Ancient Greek design). Combining mechanically-produced historical-music, film, field-recoding, and live performance, A Ladder is Not the Only Kind of Time explores ideas of heritage, place, and our changing relationship with the landscape. Each track was recorded at the site of a former water mill in the valley. This sound walk returns the music to the locations it was recorded in. A Ladder is Not the Only Kind of Time is released on the Birmingham Record Company label.

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST Welcome to Marsden Jazz Festival’s Chronotope soundwalk! For the best experience use headphones and be sure to tap the small green arrow to download the walk onto your phone before you start, rather than trying to stream it as you go along. Have your battery fully or well charged too, as the walk uses GPS (Global Positioning System) which will use up power. Listen to artists’ performances and other sounds recorded in the field by walking into a blue zone, each of which contains a different track. The sounds will play (on a loop) whilst you stay within a zone, and stop once you exit. Clicking on a zone turns it yellow. A banner will come up and you can click this to see some more information about each track. There is no defined route - just head for whichever zones you want to. There are quite a lot of them spread over the landscape surrounding Marsden, so you probably won't want to do everything in one go. Exploring different areas on different visits will work better! About Chronotope: Music in a Different Time and Place In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the first ever cancellation of Marsden Jazz Festival since its first edition in 1992. With funding from Arts Council England, the festival organisers commissioned five sets of artists to perform in different locations in the inspiring moorland landscape around Marsden and in St Bartholomew’s Church. The performances were filmed and recorded live on location and made available on the Marsden Jazz Festival YouTube channel. Now you can re-experience the Chronotope music and environmental sounds in and around the locations in which they were recorded and explore Marsden’s varied outdoor environment.
