SOUND+SPACE - LIBRARY STATION

SOUND+SPACE - LIBRARY STATION

The soundscape is created by combining the sounds heard at the train station and the library. It is created for people who want to experience the library and train station ambiance at the same time since people can see that there are lots of activities happening in the library such as reading, talking, or doing work at the station as well. It helps people relax, focus, sleep or simply get through the day.

Sound + Space : Hidden Discoveries

Sound + Space : Hidden Discoveries

When going our walk, listening to the soundscape, you are encouraged to pick up a book in the library and read it, trying to maintain focus and retain the information read. Studies and experiments have shown that listening to music, or being in the presence of sound, hinder retention of information during study, but increases mood and motivation. We wanted our soundscape to be a sensory experience to engage the audience in a physical act. The beginning of the soundscape exposes the viewer to a noisy environment, then morphs into upbeat music, before gradually quietening down to small, sparse noises. At the end of the soundscape, listeners should reflect on how well they were able to maintain focus under the different conditions presented, and if they were able to remember much of what they read. As you listen to our soundscape, you can imagine the journey of our individual experiences taking place as each soundscape flows into the next.

Simple Oasis

Simple Oasis

Our plan was to go in in the opposite direction. Due to Melbourne Central's high volume of travel and commotion, our group wanted to gather sounds from the area, replace them with sounds of relaxation away from the site, and create a soundscape that serves as a meditation for passengers to enjoy as they enter the station. We collected sounds from playgrounds, water running from the sink, birds chirping, actual sounds from the site itself and turned them into sounds that can take people back to the memories of a holiday. Our intention is to transport people to a relaxing vacation spot where they can relive their favourite moments. We began by recording sounds on the actual site and using reaper to transform them , but we soon realised that we needed sounds that were completely different from the ones we could hear and record at Melbourne Central. As a result, we decided to gather sounds from both the site and away from the location. We also came up with a series of drawings that enabled us to comprehend sounds in our own unique manner and to include all aspects of them that we deem significant

memories - sound and space

This echo is located in the RMIT Alumni Courtyard. Our aim was to transport our listeners from the RMIT Alumni Courtyard to the courtyard that they may have experienced in Primary School. Sounds that we heard in primary school are featured in our soundscape - children laughing, running, silly conversations. We wish to shift you from a serious university environment to a carefree, nostalgic and happy childhood memory. Enjoy!
