Sound + Space: Hidden Discoveries

room 1 ECHOES

Melbourne

When going our walk, listening to the soundscape, you are encouraged to pick up a book in the library and read it, trying to maintain focus and retain the information read. Studies and experiments have shown that listening to music, or being in the presence of sound, hinder retention of information during study, but increases mood and motivation. We wanted our soundscape to be a sensory experience to engage the audience in a physical act.

The beginning of the soundscape exposes the viewer to a noisy environment, then morphs into upbeat music, before gradually quietening down to small, sparse noises. At the end of the soundscape, listeners should reflect on how well they were able to maintain focus under the different conditions presented, and if they were able to remember much of what they read.

As you listen to our soundscape, you can imagine the journey of our individual experiences taking place as each soundscape flows into the next.
