This walk focuses on the various art sculptures that are located around Queen's University Campus and my musical interpretation of each.

This is a musical representation of my favourite place to study and relax on campus, the Time Sculpture located in Breakwater Park. My work is structured to mirror the shape of the sculpture. The sound builds up to a peak, before a period of silence that represents the break in the sculpture, and then the sound works backwards in an almost identical manner, again to follow what the sculpture looks like. This piece uses recordings of the lake that I recorded here, as well as sequences generated on VCV Rack.

Five is my artistic sound interpretation of Alan Dickson's work "Five Sculptures on Topological Themes." These beautiful, smooth sculptures were designed to have a continual surface, and therefore this piece was created around the idea of continuity. The pre-recorded flute piece repeats over and over again with different reiterations based on live flute which influenced how the playback would be altered. This piece is composed for a trio, pre-recorded flute, live flute and modular synthesizer.

“Saqqara”, a duet for metal structure and modular synthesizer, was inspired by the sculpture Pyramidal Structure – Sakkarah located behind Jeffrey Hall. This piece is more literally inspired by the sculpture itself as all of the sounds used in this piece (not including the tones from the modular synthesizer) are recorded noises of myself banging on the metal to hear its resonant tones using contact microphones (see cover photo). Not only are the sounds directly from the structure, but the story guiding my piece comes from the inspiration for said structure, the ancient Saqqara burial grounds in Egypt. After researching the history of this location, I structured my piece around the burial traditions of ancient Egypt. The first section, 0:00-1:45, represents the burial parade where the body is placed in the tomb. The second section, 1:45-3:05, represents the priest re-awakening the senses of the dead and the body awakening to face the afterlife, confused. The last section, 3:05-end, represents the judgement of the soul at the hands of Osiris, the god of the underworld.
