Isabella Penna-Ward "Birthdays Gone By" 2022

Description: Inspired by Adrienne Rich’s poem Planetarium, which is about a pioneer woman astronomer, I want to narrate the infinite potentiality of women and specifically how they could shape the space (universe). Delving into Rich’s time of both oppression on women and “revolution” from women, I try to incorporate various perspectives for the narration. I remix audio recordings of poems, scientific podcasts, and real calling from the universe.

Beats in 3 different popular styles (trap, upbeat, and drill) with a low pass filter and gain on them. The effects are intended to make it feel as though the music is coming from within whatever building the listener is walking past. It juxtaposes the sounds of campus at night with a listener who may be doing the walk during the day or going by a building that may never make these noises (ex: Sawyer).

Description: This work quotes the 2004 song “So Alive” by Kings of Tomorrow, whose lyrics are unofficially attributed to motivational speaker Lisa Nichols. Untitled concerns itself with the processes of memorization and repetition—after memorizing the lyrics, I recited them repetitively without timing queues from the original song, furthering my own understanding of the text in a process approaching the realm of prayer. The final product is at once comforting and creepy, evoking a divine voice (omphē) while ultimately reflecting a personal spirituality rooted in popular media and Christian hymns.

Description: A family member is neurodivergent (he is on the Autism Spectrum, has BRRS, and a PTEN gene mutation). Many neurotypicals don't understand what sensory overload feels like. In "NEURODIVERGENT", I attempt to show the contrast between what a neurotypical would hear versus what someone with, say, Autism may hear in the same situation. I also attempt to show why focusing on the correct thing may be difficult for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, given they are often overwhelmed by and attending to multiple stimuli at once.

Description: A scene of subtle progression, a hydrophone explores the wooshes and whirs of the Green River. Echoes of water droplets sound in a hollow cave, emerging at the surface as runoff from a flooding river. The piece follows the footsteps of a person as they trudge through the damp soundscape.

Description: my sound piece is a remixed song I created based off of an audio recording I taped of my brother Sami a few years ago. We were driving home when Sami began speaking of the sadness and disillusionment he feels when observing people living through/living for social media. (A feeling I am sure we can all relate to.) He says these social medialites are akin to a flock of sheep running towards a cliff, following some false idol or idea of a perfect reality. At the end of the piece I included audio of distressed people’s voices representing the sheeps’ journey towards the all-consuming edge.

Description: I’ve had a fascination with palindromes for quite some time, leading to many questions. Is a palindrome one or two parts? Is it two points converging or one vector with a start and end? Is there an element of reversal? AmanaplanacanalpanamA was borne out of an incredibly frivolous and intense argument I had with a somewhat friend about something completely stupid. While we were certainly discussing the topic, the other person's arguments were often oddly worded, off-topic, and mostly ill-informed. My goal with the somewhat arbitrary feeling entries of sound was to emulate my confusion in these moments. The palindrome and circle debate portrayed was a product of my fascination with palindromes, but my main goal was to emulate the characteristics of our argument: little to no substance, constant interruptions, and no end in sight.

I describe the struggle of translating things in my mind in 2 different languages. The phrase I use is particularly one I struggled to translate since it is a phrase used in the Arab world to describe housewives -- ironically called "privileged" when they do not really get to choose to work or not especially in the context of households that use this phrase.

It is absolutely so crazy and quite remarkable how people can create online personas of themselves that exist solely in the virtual realm of existence—you may not even know me in real life, but you can definitely get a read of who I am through my online presence. My audio piece is from the perspective of this digital, artifical being of myself whom I attempt to give life, consciousness, and purpose to.
