This soundwalk traces a journey across McMaster, moving from the calm of the greenhouse through study, social life, and physical activity, before returning to nature at the trail.

MDCL Green House

In the greenhouse, although it is a student space, the presence of local families and children at play brings unexpected liveliness to the calm environment.

Mills Memorial Library

The library is not completely silent—students study, borrow books, make photocopies, and sometimes even eat here, creating a mix of quiet concentration and everyday noise.

Student Center

The Student Centre is filled with the sounds of students eating, buying coffee, and chatting with friends. It is not only a lively social hub but also a busy passageway leading toward the academic buildings.

TwelvEighty Bar and Grill

1280 is a hidden underground passage connecting the Student Centre to Togo Salmon Hall. Though it cannot be found on the map, it is well known among students for its secret food spots. The sounds here blend footsteps echoing in the tunnel with the clatter of trays and conversations from the underground restaurant, creating a sense of both transition and discovery.

David Braley Athletic Center

In the basketball gym, the sharp squeak of shoes, the rhythmic bounce of the ball, and players’ shouts fill the space with energy. The overlapping sounds create a lively and competitive atmosphere that contrasts with quieter parts of campus.

Campbell Track

At Campbell Track, the sounds of basketball bouncing, music playing, and students talking fill the space. These overlapping layers of activity reveal the energetic and social side of student life, making it a strong starting point for the soundwalk.

Ravine Road Trail

Walking past the gym and down along the field, the entrance to Ravine Road Trail appears in the middle of the parking lot. Here, the sounds shift to a mix of footsteps on gravel, light conversations between students and local residents, runners’ steady breathing, and the occasional click of cameras from people hiking and taking photos. It marks the transition from the busy campus into the calm of McMaster’s back hill.

They've forced growth, they've given me space and an outlet when I needed. Ultimately, they've informed who I am today. If you can relate to some physical activity being a dominant aspect of your life, you can relate to this.

Home of Black Excellence @ McMaster

Black Excellence at McMaster is a soundwalk that guides listeners through a tour of strong sites across campus where Black culture, resilience, and community thrive. On each site, points of interest mark locations important to Black students—from vibrant events such as the celebratory BSSC cookout and Black History Month basketball games to moments of reflection in serene gardens to celebratory events such as Black Grad. With narrative, background noise, and arrangement, the walk inspires the feeling of belongingness and superiority that defines these locations. This soundwalk is more than a guided tour; it is an audio journey that exalts tradition, joy, and the resilience of community at McMaster University.
