This walk evokes my emotions and associations with different places, as well as battles between my different identities

ELIOT RD

Home and Belonging, both longings and questions Where is home? Where do I belong? Where am I going and where have I been?

Prague… I was born in a hospital in the suburban countryside of the Czech Republic, on a bright morning with the wind whispering through the maple trees ringing the grounds. It was the first place that felt like everywhere, for it was all I knew–my world the gates at the city’s outer wall, guarding my treasured childhood memories, Feeding swans by the Vlatava River, Strolling with my older brother through Christmas Markets, Drinking hot chocolate as we watch the sunrise on the balcony,

When I tell people I was born in Prague, I get wide-eyed stares and at these moments I am psychic: How could this Asian girl be from the Czech Republic?

Beijing… I have a Chinese Passport, So I should be “from China,” Easy right? But I never feel “Chinese” enough when I’m in Beijing, my friend's Westerners with Western tastes and tongues, Whatever that means…

PLANE---> Lexington It was the summer of 2018 I boarded a plane from Beijing International airport to Boston Logan airport, The plane ride felt like a hundred hours, It felt like I was flying endlessly into the abyss, I lay my head on my father’s shoulder Gripped his arm with my hands I leaned back as the world behind me fell into a blur, My head rested against the small elliptical window We climbed higher and higher until all I could see were patches of the city appearing and disappearing beneath the smoggy clouds Nestled in my seat, I wondered what the future held for me…

Season

FALL: The leaves crackle under my feet as I drag them across the concrete sidewalk with the heel of my boot. Lazily. The trees around me are a starburst of orange, red, and yellow–how vibrant things can be even as they dim toward winter. Years before in Beijing, fall was a crowded city full of skyscrapers, brushing across low-slung clouds. It was a melancholy gray; now it’s all a wash of maroon flooded across a November street. It is crazy how much life has changed in just four years. Four years ago, I was in Beijing alongside people who I have known since kindergarten, I was in after-school sports practice, I was in my math class, eyes gazing outside of the large glass windows that filled the school. Longing for the clock to strike 3:30 pm. Now, I am sitting in my bedroom, in Concord Massachusetts with a completely different group of people who came from different cultures and backgrounds compared to me, people who have fundamentally changed who I am. Fall, a season I used to associate with the grey low-slung clouds, now a maroon November street.

WINTER: BOOM. My boots slip out right under me, and I find myself face-planted into the slushy cold, half-melted puddle of snow. Ouch, I say under my breath. I followed up with a much louder irritated AGHHHHH. My stack of notebooks that were once filled with crisp white pages is now soggy and ripping at the seams. I pick up my notebook and flip through the pages. My drawings, notes, and sketches all blended together into one. As I look to get up, the sun reflected off the blankets of snow on the sidewalk creating a blazing glare that shone right into my eyes.

SPRING: I can feel the flowers sprouting from the ground, little by little, shooting up into the sky to form little bursts of hope, revealing their hearts to the world around them. They sway side to side, dancing in the light breeze. I take a deep breath in, inhaling the ambrosial aroma of the sweet petals. Though the relics of winter are still present, I can feel the warmth coming. The soft spring air blow past my shoulders, I stand, embracing the promises of summer days.

SUMMER: I close my eyes…I can feel a million different rays reflect onto my arm, almost as if the sun is embracing me for a warm hug for the first time. In the background, my ears are alert as the hummingbirds sing what seemed like an orchestrated performance. I tilt my head upwards. The marshmallow clouds drift freely against the blazing blue sky. Flowers now at full bloom, they tilt their heads along with me, gazing up into the summer sun. As the golden rays cast a spell of evergreen…

Sound on Mystic

Sound on Mystic

Sound on Mystic is an outdoor audio installation combining music, spoken word, sound art and ambience into an immersive experience. It is located along a two-mile stretch of the Mystic River in Medford and Arlington, Massachusetts, and is accessed through ECHOES, a free mobile app that uses GPS data to cue different sounds at various sites. Once you download the app, just put on a pair of headphones, take a walk within the installation’s extensive boundaries, and you'll hear a diverse set of sound works that are all united by the river itself, and its complex legacy as a place of history and nature, community and conflict, labor and recreation. Access Instructions: Install the ECHOES app (the link is below, skip to step 3 if you've already found the walk in ECHOES) Search for "Sound on Mystic" inside the app Download the walk (this will function better than streaming the walk) Close out other apps on your phone that access your location and may interfere with ECHOES Go to the river and open the walk. You will see a map with areas highlighted in blue. As soon as you enter a highlighted area, sound will automatically begin to play. Depending on how fast you walk, some pieces will overlap with each other, or some pieces will play completely leaving a period of silence. Don't worry, that's all just part of the experience -- enjoy! Sound on Mystic is created by Ian Coss, Dwayne A Johnson, and Gary Roberts, with funding from the Medford Arts Council and Arlington Cultural Council, and support from the Mystic River Watershed Association.
