You will hear Megan Williams talk about some of the amazing artwork we have on the campus. Megan is a curator and writer with over fifteen years of experience in programming and management roles across the university art museum sector. This walk is designed to give you information of each art, recommend downloading the walk for a better optimal experience. This work is part of a research project between Leah Barclay, Tricia King and Lyndon Davis exploring site-responsive photography, immersive soundscape and Indigenous knowledge. The work explores methods of seeing sound and hearing images through a locative media walk with photography and soundscapes. This is the third iteration of Holocene - which responds to an immersive sound walk of the same name along the edge of the lake at Boreen Point for Floating Land 2021. The work references the current period of geologic time that corresponds with the global changes caused by human activities and technological revolutions. It explores the tensions present in UNESCO biosphere reserves, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges and contradictions of sustainable development. The audience walked along the edge of the lake at dusk with their feet in the water wearing wireless headphones and listening to a live soundscape mix. The acoustic ecology focused around the Noosa Biosphere Reserve revealing invisible ecosystems we usually cannot hear including hydrophones deep in the everglades and microbats navigating the surface of the lake at dusk. The experience draws on the voices of traditional owners, including Lyndon Davis who is a key collaborator on this research. For this locative experience, Leah has created a soundscape in response to Tricia's images from the original sound walk at Boreen Point and additionally imagery from their collaboration project Listening in the Wild - www.listeninginthewild.com

Hi there. Welcome to my immersive experience featuring recordings from my local forest. You will hear from a collection of birds, bugs and the trees themselves. These recordings are taken late in the evening, allowing you to hear sounds from within the forest you might not usually, whether that’s due to not feeling comfortable or safe in that area, not having access or just not wanting to be eaten alive by mosquitos. This experience is wheelchair accessible, with each Echo reachable along the footpaths and there are also nearby chairs and benches. Note that the Echoes will loop if you stay within them, and the 8th Echo plays louder the closer you are to the centre. Please be aware of other people and the wildlife on campus, especially the kangaroos.

Their World invites you to experience the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) campus through a new sensory lens—one grounded in deep listening, curiosity, and care. As you walk, you’ll be immersed in an intricate soundscape composed of field recordings gathered through the roots of trees. These recordings capture the hidden melodies that resonate beneath our feet and all around us—the subtle murmur of roots sucking up water, rustle of leaves, the pulse of insects, the calls of birds, and rain drops playing the trees like drums. This work offers a glimpse into a world not shaped by human hands but inhabited by countless beings whose lives unfold in parallel to our own. It asks you to slow down, to tune in, and to listen differently—not for us, but for them. Their World is both an artwork and an act of reciprocity. It reflects the artist’s deep love for the natural world and the belief that attentive, respectful listening can shift how we relate to place. In walking this path, you’re invited to let go of expectation and open yourself to the vitality, complexity, and beauty of the more-than-human world that surrounds us—always speaking, if we choose to hear it.
