The River Fleet rises in Hampstead Heath and is tunnelled underground through Camden, past the old factories that became the Central Saint Martins site, and down towards the Thames. These buildings were key spaces during the acid house rave scene, which gained momentum during the late 80s and 90s. Where you stand now, the river flows deep underground, intersecting the canal. We invite you to consider what flows beneath, the undercurrents of the city, and what may resurface.

Sound is ephemeral; it belongs to no one and cannot be captured in words. Throughout its long history, From child to old man, life goes round and round, the public space of a busy station has been the scene of daily dramas: people waiting, hurrying, talking or contemplating. These dramas capture our attention, they raise the question, ‘Where do we come from and where do we go’, yet they cannot be answered.

Before this building was a Uniqlo it was Bagleys, a warehouse used for raving. What you are hearing is music from that time combined with audio captured from the present, alongside a video about a recent uniqlo opening

How the Criminal Justice Bill stopped the fun at Bagleys nightclub... now selling everyday garments, with all signs of this history erased or hidden away. This piece examines what happened when the fun was forced to stop, and how people reacted with violent protests. It asks why this history is now invisible, airbrushed out for the sake of a nice shopping experience.

This sound brings together two invisibilties that lurk in King’s Cross.

The first is the “lost” River Fleet, flowing from Hampstead Heath to Blackfriars. Once several hundred feet wide and rumoured to possess healing properties, the fleet was a substantial body of water. As the city grew between the 17th and 18th century, space and sanitation became unimaginable around the river. Consequently, by 1870 the Fleet was almost entirely covered. Despite concealment, the river’s subterranean existence persists. Hidden from sight, the Fleet’s journey can be traced underneath this very point. 

Secondly, this sound excavates the music-history that characterises the area. The site of Coal Drops Yard was once home to Bagley’s, a venue that influenced genres that formed the sonic identity 90s rave culture, such as acid house and jungle. However, as redevelopment loomed, Bagley’s was forced to close its doors in 2007.

Both the Fleet and Bagley’s were submerged through London’s eternally changing shape and form.
