Sounds of Working the Tweed, Scottish Borders

A short trail around Bremenium Roman Fort, one of the northernmost forts in the Roman Empire and one of the best preserved sites in Northumberland National Park.

‘Seal laments’ and other natural sounds of the Holy Island landscape – recorded by legendary Frozen Planet sound recordist Chris Watson – have been transcribed into a cello composition inspired by famous cellist Guilhermina Suggia, who often stayed at Lindisfarne Castle. This immersive sound piece, created with renowned cellist Gyda Valtysdottir, has been installed within the Castle, with accompanying objects, nature writing, and a text projection that claims to ‘translate’ the seal song as a playful yet grave warning of climate catastrophe. This sound walk allows the sound to be heard on the path up to the Castle and throughout the surrounding area, similar to the way that Suggia's performances were often heard by islanders listening by the Castle's open windows. Come and enjoy a woodland walk through history! Queen Mary's Mount, near Carberry, was the site of the armed confrontation that ended the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, on 15 June, 1567. Follow this Echo, and I'll tell you all about it. Download the Echo at home, and then look for the way into the woods on the B6414 road between Crossgatehall and Elphinstone. Start the Echo there and it will help you to find it. It can be quite muddy in these woods after rain, so you should wear appropriate footwear........
