Song (After Nature)

Song (After Nature)

‘Seal laments’ and other natural sounds of the Holy Island landscape – recorded by legendary Frozen Planet sound recordist Chris Watson – have been transcribed into a cello composition inspired by famous cellist Guilhermina Suggia, who often stayed at Lindisfarne Castle. This immersive sound piece, created with renowned cellist Gyda Valtysdottir, has been installed within the Castle, with accompanying objects, nature writing, and a text projection that claims to ‘translate’ the seal song as a playful yet grave warning of climate catastrophe. This sound walk allows the sound to be heard on the path up to the Castle and throughout the surrounding area, similar to the way that Suggia's performances were often heard by islanders listening by the Castle's open windows. The Castle exhibition is open from 5th March to 30th October 2022. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lindisfarne-castle With thanks to all who have contributed to the work, and to Arts Council England, Lindisfarne Castle, The National Trust, Maltings (Berwick), Arts and Heritage, Newcastle University and New Writing North.

Pipe Up Acoustic Ecology Walk

Pipe Up Acoustic Ecology Walk

Pipe up is a two part exhibition as part of the wider Polluted Leisure project supported by The Bartlett Fund and Newcastle University. It is a collaboration between two emerging artists, Hannah Sparkes and Anna Muddiman. The Cullercoats Bay underpass gallery showcases 10 etched copper plates depicting local outlet pipes. These pipes are sites and carriers of pollution in Cullercoats Bay and Whitley Bay. The bodily forms respond to the rhythms and flows of the surrounding environment, considering boundaries between land and sea and humanity and nature, through negative space. Participants are invited to engage in an ecological deep listening experience which harnesses the use of geotagging sound technology to map recordings along the coastal path. The artists hope this will prompt the audience to form closer relationships to their natural surroundings, and develop an empathetic response to the problem of pollution.

North Tyneside Sound Walk 2020

North Tyneside Sound Walk 2020

In partnership with the North Tyneside Learning Trust, the Parliamentary Archives, and Nexus (Tyne & Wear Metro), the North Tyneside Sound Walk 2020 saw Year 9 children from 3 secondary schools working together to create a unique resource for visitors to their local area. Over two weeks, the children worked together with artists, musicians, teachers, archivists and more, to uncover stories from the history of North Tyneside. Inspired by these stories, the children developed three sound walks, and visual art for an exhibition in a local art gallery. Created, devised & performed by the children of Norham, John Spence Community and Marden High Schools. Credits: Oboe – Tim Keasley Tuba – Danielle Price Trombone – Ian Sankey Euphonium – Martin Thomson Artists & workshop leaders – Hannah James, Ellen Erichsen & Harry Hughes. Additional narration by Beth Donkin. Recorded on location by Joe Snape. Mixed and mastered by Pierpaolo Demarchi. Design by Kamilla Vinther.

Queen Mary's Mount

Queen Mary's Mount

Come and enjoy a woodland walk through history! Queen Mary's Mount, near Carberry, was the site of the armed confrontation that ended the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, on 15 June, 1567. Follow this Echo, and I'll tell you all about it. Download the Echo at home, and then look for the way into the woods on the B6414 road between Crossgatehall and Elphinstone. Start the Echo there and it will help you to find it. It can be quite muddy in these woods after rain, so you should wear appropriate footwear........ Carberry Hill, once the home of the Elphinstone family, is now managed by the Buccleuch Estate. The images, on the cover of this Collection, are of Mary, with Lord Bothwell on the right. On the left is a medallion celebrating her marriage to Lord Darnley. All these images are reproduced by permission of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
