A walk around the North Lakes, Lake Eden. Super relaxing and a great walk that is a good length to walk and talk.

Looking Over The Lake

The beginning of the Eden Lake Sound Walk in North Lakes. On Saturday the 1st April at 3:30 p.m., the recordings and photographs were taken. The lake wasn't crowded, and there were no strong winds; the sky was cloudy and looked as if it was about to rain, thankfully it didn't. The water level signs are the most noticeable aspect on this side of the lake; I wish I had checked what the levels were in the past because they appear to be very low right now.

Walking along a plank bridge

The Boardwalk restaurant was on the right side of the bridge, whereas the lake was to the left. Thousands of Lilly pads were piled on top of one another in the lake. They were light green in color with yellow and brown flakes around the edges. Personally, I love how much color these plants add to the lake. The sounds that were often heard were people walking across the bridge and the distant music from the café.

The Road Next To The Bridge

This is the lake's longest bridge, where you're able to walk besides the main road and also see the entire lake. In this spot I was able to hear the trees rustling and the sounds of distant crows and other small birds chirping, since this bridge is on the main road it isn’t usually quiet as there are always cars passing by.

Playful Birds

There were several areas along the lake's path where visitors could have a picnic while the kids played on the playset or have a go on the exercise equipment. There were tall trees and thousands of lizards lounging in the sun; it was also a popular hangout for birds.

New Bird Sounds

It had been a while since I had visited Eden Lake, and I must say that I was surprised to hear so many different types of birds. On this path, I was greeted with more sunbathing lizards and a large bird sitting on a tree branch nestled in their feathers. The bridge I walked on in the past use to be a little lake, but it has now been completely overrun by the pest plant. It is quite a shock to see how much the weed had taken over the place.

Shaded Swamp Bridge

There was a little bridge at the end of the walk that crossed over a small swamp. In the swamp, I noticed a bizarre structure that resembled a sculpture. I'm not sure how the earth built such a structure, but it looked as if the ground had been peeled off. There was one bird that I was surprised to hear and it was a bird that I had usually heard in the mornings, there were so many different types of birds on this walk but I assume it had something to do with the possible chance of rain.

Café By The Lake

This was the busiest area of the park, where families had gathered for lunch or a stroll around the lake. Kids gathered around the lake to watch lizards, ducks, and my personal favorite, swans. Because the wildlife is accustomed to being around people, a duck will frequently waddle over to you to investigate what you are doing. The sounds in the area include birds fighting each other and children excited about the wildlife. I believe that recording human reactions to wildlife is also significant when trying to understand the environment; these sounds communicate to us that the Lake is a location of enjoyment and happiness, as well as a place rich in wildlife.

A Walk Around The Park

I was often passed by walkers and the occasional bike rider when walking this path. This section of the lake has lovely hedges and trees that provide shade along the walking path. The background audio also captures the sound of ducks flapping their wings in the lake; they were adorable.

This soundscape walk depicts how we can have a better grounding in our everyday environments regardless of the often overwhelming anthropogenic soundscape. This soundscape walk will take you through the sounds of an urban beach beginning with listening to the everyday soundscape and progressing into the different natural soundscapes throughout the day at the beach. Throughout the soundscapes see if you can appreciate the differences between the first soundscape and the five that follow it, and use it as an example on how to take notice of your own natural soundscapes in your own life. Acknowledgement: I acknowledge the Gubbi Gubbi people, the traditional owners of the land on which this soundscape is placed and the land that the audio and photographs are collected from, and I pay my respect to the elders past, present and emerging. Warning: Whilst this soundscape does not require you to cross any roads, it is still situated nearby them, always be aware of your surroundings. This soundscape also takes place in an area of high foot and bicycle traffic, always be vigilant and be curtious of other pathway users.
