Northwestern University Tree Tour

Welcome to the Northwestern Indigenous Tour, produced by the Northwestern Center for Native American and Indigenous Research. During this tour, you’ll visit fourteen landmarks on Northwestern’s campus and learn more about the past histories and present realities of Native peoples, places, and events and how they are tied to Northwestern University. This tour will take approximately one and a half hours. Thank you for joining us on the Black Student Experience at Northwestern University tour! Over the next hour, you will hear stories about the fight for racial equity led by Black students at Northwestern. These are more than stories, you will hear about lived experiences of Black students based on archival documentation. For some, these stories will be difficult to hear and might not mirror your views of the institution. If that is the case, we invite you to engage with an open mind and with empathy. Use this opportunity to listen and learn. For others, this tour is about truth-telling. It speaks to a broader history of injustice and a fight for equity and inclusion. While it is not all-encompassing, we hope that this tour affirms those experiences and offers some historical context for the structures that exist today that foster equity and inclusion. As you travel between each stop, please use that time as an opportunity to reflect on what you hear, you can use the discussion questions as a guide. CASE - Soundscapes 2021-2022

This is the Independent Study Project for Sound Design

Imaginary flocks of midwestern birds gather in Lurie Garden. These imaginary flocks are formed from recordings of individual bird calls and custom performance software by Earful.be. Each Echo presents an audio capture of a different location in the 3D performance space spread virtually over Lurie Garden. This dance music mix is loosely sectioned into three acts. The first act of the mix simulates the questioning of norms and imagining of alternatives that often precedes political action. The second replicates the act of protest sonically. The third invites the listener to build and create those alternatives. The ~one-hour long mix features original productions from several artists of color, including me, and is tied to physical manifestations of race on the UChicago campus (such as the Linnaeus statue on the Midway and the OI), activated intentionally to transgress traditional notions of space. The final mix is mastered for stereo, so that listeners, using headphones, can engage with race on campus. In centering marginalized artists across genres spanning soul, techno, house, trance, deconstructed + Jersey club, jungle, bass, and reggae, I hope to evoke a response of resilience, imagining, and resistance in listeners, as they imagine and act upon a more collectively liberatory future outside the walls of the university.

Students in the graduate seminar MUSI 45022: Composing for Spatial Audio have written site-specific compositions for locations throughout the University of Chicago's campus. When the Echoes app is open you will see a map of each sonic location. As you progress, sounds will activate and begin playing based on your location.
