Take a leisurely stroll from the Arch to Sargeant Hall while four experts from Northwestern tell you about the trees that call this campus home.

Introduction

Welcome to the walk! This is located at the visitor's center, and we encourage you to listen while you walk to the arch, where you can find the first stop.

The Old Oak

This tree is no longer here, but used to stand near the Weber Arch.

Oak Grove

This is a heavily leaning tree in a tall, shady grove.

Maple (Big Mama)

This Maple is on the edge of Deering Meadow and Sheridan Road.

Kent State Memorial Grove

This is a small stand of trees with a plaque on the south edge of Deering Meadow near the library.

Ginkgo

The Ginkgo sits on the north end of Deering Library by a fork in the path.

Juniper

This tree lives in the bike parking on North of Deering Library.

Burr Oak (Spongey Moth)

The Burr Oak across from the Jacobs Center is one of the largest trees in the grove North of the libraries.

Twisted Maple

This tree stands at the top of a small hill north of University Library, looking over the Lakefill.

This Cork tree lives just south of Annenberg Hall.

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel is a shrub that fills much of the green space between Swift Hall and Shanley Pavilion.

These trees line much of the path traveling north behind the Garrett Seminary.

This space is tucked behind the Dearborn Observatory, just south of the Technological Institute.

This group of trees used to line a lakefront memorial path. The corridor behind Tech is close to where they used to stand.

Thank you for joining us on the Black Student Experience at Northwestern University tour! Over the next hour, you will hear stories about the fight for racial equity led by Black students at Northwestern. These are more than stories, you will hear about lived experiences of Black students based on archival documentation. For some, these stories will be difficult to hear and might not mirror your views of the institution. If that is the case, we invite you to engage with an open mind and with empathy. Use this opportunity to listen and learn. For others, this tour is about truth-telling. It speaks to a broader history of injustice and a fight for equity and inclusion. While it is not all-encompassing, we hope that this tour affirms those experiences and offers some historical context for the structures that exist today that foster equity and inclusion. As you travel between each stop, please use that time as an opportunity to reflect on what you hear, you can use the discussion questions as a guide. Imaginary Flocks of Lurie Garden

Imaginary flocks of midwestern birds gather in Lurie Garden. These imaginary flocks are formed from recordings of individual bird calls and custom performance software by Earful.be. Each Echo presents an audio capture of a different location in the 3D performance space spread virtually over Lurie Garden. Down the Ivory Tower: Moving Towards An Aural Afrofuture

This dance music mix is loosely sectioned into three acts. The first act of the mix simulates the questioning of norms and imagining of alternatives that often precedes political action. The second replicates the act of protest sonically. The third invites the listener to build and create those alternatives. The ~one-hour long mix features original productions from several artists of color, including me, and is tied to physical manifestations of race on the UChicago campus (such as the Linnaeus statue on the Midway and the OI), activated intentionally to transgress traditional notions of space. The final mix is mastered for stereo, so that listeners, using headphones, can engage with race on campus. In centering marginalized artists across genres spanning soul, techno, house, trance, deconstructed + Jersey club, jungle, bass, and reggae, I hope to evoke a response of resilience, imagining, and resistance in listeners, as they imagine and act upon a more collectively liberatory future outside the walls of the university.
