Whispering Walls St Helens with Van Diemen's Fiddles

The 2km walk explores some of the history of Torquay. Begin your tour near the Spirit of Devonport river ferry at the bottom of Thomas Street. A ferry service, of one kind or another, has operated from this area since the establishment of the town.

Fancy a stroll on kunanyi, accompanied by fiddles and mutated windchimes? Good. This walk runs from Fern Tree Park to Silver Falls. If you're using noise reducing headphones, we suggest you turn that feature off to experience the walk as intended - the spontaneous, real-time sounds from the Pipeline are just as important as the audio tracks in the Echoes app.

Come and take a walk with the Tasman Homeschoolers! Follow the route of their sound walk, with spoken reflections created by the children and their families. Across four workshops, participants developed skills in listening, audio technology, storytelling, and group work. The project culminated in a guided sound walk and reflection session. The children identified points of interest on the walk and recorded their reflections. This project was an outcome of 'The Listening Project' by Van Diemen's Band, facilitated by teaching artist Rachel Meyers and supported by the Tasmanian Government.

Welcome to the Table Cape Listening Project, a sound walk music composition by Rachel Meyers, commissioned by Business Northwest. It was inspired after a residency of deep listening to the area, and is a combination of music, field recordings, and sound manipulations that creatively respond to the area. As you arrive in the carpark, the audio will begin playing through the Echoes.xyz app on your mobile phone or listening device - all you need to do is pop in some headphones and press 'Start Walk.' As you move through the walk linking Table Cape Lighthouse with the Lookout or vice versa, the audio will automatically begin to play. The speed at which you walk will dictate how the tracks overlap and intersect with each other, so every time it is listened there are small variations. Once you reach the end of the walk, the track that you are listening to will gradually fade out. Once it is finished, we suggest that for your return journey, you take out the headphones and simply listen deeply to the sounds around you.

My concept is to accumulate pre-conceived ideas about the sounds people intend to hear when walking through the National Rhododendron Gardens; however, the noises are polluted and congested by surrounding distractions, potentially changing people's perspectives on the natural landscape. The soundscape includes four echoes, choreographed together and placed individually around the site to guide the listener through the noise polluted site. (Will require headphones)

The DIS Soundscape has the artistic intention to cause feelings of DIScomfort and DISorientation in Melbourne as a social commentary on noise pollution living in the city.

An immersive AR Soundscape designed to replicate the sounds predominantly rooted within a hiking trail, amongst an ambiance of pure organic materials- ironically constructed with recordings of synthetic/ artificial sounds that have been edited to mirror the qualities and masquerade as the organic sounds of nature. As you make your way through you will be greeted by a rushing stream of water that lures you into a veiled cavity within the forest that encapsulates you, sheltering you amidst a curtain of tall trees lined with shrubs that stretch around the border of this organic cavern. These establishing sounds are designed to parallel "The Grotto", situated in the Royal Melbourne Botanical Gardens. I've chosen this location because I felt it materialized my concept quite effectively. I wanted a place where the transition from a completely undisturbed organic space to a heavily industrialized environment would be fairly stark, and therefore intensify my intent by emphasizing the illusionary qualities of my composition. Upon initiating these initial recordings, it begins to sprinkle with"rain" before thundering down in a heavy gush. The skies begin clearing as you edge the conclusion of the walk nearing the exit of the grotto which leads you to a completely juxtaposed setting of a cityscape with tall grey buildings that stretch across the horizon. As you enter the footpath and conclude your walk, you will approach a crossing, simultaneously the familiar sounds of a "beg beeper", posing as a sort of alarm to awaken you from this trance to meet the industrialized reality awaiting you ahead. This soundscape is developed with the intent to allude to the growing environmental calamities specifically with regards to its acceleration through human involvement; poverty and food waste, pollution, overuse of greenhouse gasses, etc. which is paralleled with the "industrial" synthetic sounds, that are used to replicate the organic sounds that they pose as, (and landscape awaiting you at the conclusion of the walk) highlighting inaccuracy and impaired attempts to replicate or restore them. Ideally, the intent is not to educate what we already know, but to stress the imperativeness of taking action whilst there still is time.
