Lore from the Lookout

Lore from the Lookout

This is an audiowalk/journey that has unconventional stories that have taken place in some of the most beautiful places in Belfast. The walk is called “Lore from the Lookout” because it combines the narrator’s (myself) initial perspective and how that feeling relates to a story that would be said about the place from around the River Lagan. The places covered in the audio walk are the Queen's Bridge, Titanic, Belfast Harbour and the Salmon of Knowledge. This audio walk is multifunctional. The stories have been recorded in a podcast format and can be listened on other platforms like Youtube and Spotify as well. The podcast is dynamic in its storytelling and is filled with subjective experiences and emotions and how they relate to the stories themselves. It aptly fits in with the platforms, due to Spotify and Youtube's storytelling podcast boom. It is highly recommended to listen to this audio walk with earphones for the best experience and use any transportation of your choice to get from one place to another. Enjoy!

Two by Two: A Sailortown Fable

Two by Two: A Sailortown Fable

Ella is searching for clues and patiently waiting for Noah's Ark to dock at Belfast harbour. Follow her voice on this audio walk and discover the people, buildings, and animals (real and imagined) of Belfast's Sailortown. Find the traces of Ella's story at the blue shapes on the map: Rectangular shapes are the main story points (Durations ~2:00-3:30); and Circles are short fragments echoing along the way (Durations ~ 0:10-0:30). If you want to follow Ella's path more closely, follow the rectangular main story points in number order 1 to 5. Your starting point will be Yorkgate Station Car Park (top left), moving to Benny's cafe, the Rotterdam Bar, the American Bar, the Skate Park on Little Patrick St (bottom left), then the deep dock (top right). Tap on the blue rectangles to check their numbers. But remember that Ella's story has got a bit jumbled up, so its ok to wander and find your own path through the locations on the map. Eventually you'll piece together some of the fragments of Ella's story, just as she is trying to piece together her plan. You can get a hint of the content for a location point by tapping on its marker on the map. Please listen through headphones and turn on your phone's WiFi to help improve your location accuracy. Please take care whilst navigating the streets - be mindful of traffic and be careful when crossing roads. Download the walk-in advance to prevent issues with mobile data streaming. PARROT FEVER (in Belfast)

PARROT FEVER (in Belfast)

**PARROT FEVER** - a mobile audio story in two cities Words & voice by Emily DeDakis | Sound & production by John D'Arcy After the disappearance (and possible kidnapping) of her English colleague, a U.S. photojournalist navigates a city that feels suddenly less familiar. Follow in the photojournalist's steps and eavesdrop on imagined conversations with her lost colleague. Along the way, she quotes from her colleague’s journalism bible *‘Parrot Fever: Bylaws for the Aspiring Journalists’*, pithy directives about cultivating sources, trust, learning where you belong and learning your craft. --- This mobile audio story is told in seven parts, each planted at a special location. This version, **PARROT FEVER (in Belfast)**, locates each part of the story to a place in Belfast. If you are in Beirut, search the Echoes app for **PARROT FEVER (in Beirut)** and explore the same story across locations in that city. Story locations are marked by the blue shapes on the map. Get a hint of the content at a location point by tapping on its marker on the map. Please listen through headphones and turn on your phone's WiFi to help improve your location accuracy. Download the walk’s audio in advance to prevent issues with mobile data streaming. Take good care whilst navigating the streets. Be mindful of traffic and fellow pedestrians, and be careful when crossing roads. --- *“For what we see is what we are, for eyes are a projector not only a viewer, for whatever we photograph we always lose.” * - Noir Barakat (@noirbarakat) --- The events and characters of PARROT FEVER are entirely imagined. The story exists out of time and in both of the two cities that inspired it - Beirut & Belfast. Emily is a U.S. native & longtime resident of Belfast. She’s the daughter of a journalist and as a young child was keenly aware of the kidnapping of Associated Press reporter Terry Anderson (1947-2024). Anderson was held hostage in Beirut from 1985-1991 and passed away during the writing of this audio story in April 2024. PARROT FEVER is dedicated to members of the press across the world, recognising the dangers they face - especially native journalists of Gaza and Lebanon, currently under direct attack. Learn more and support the Committee to Protect Journalists: cpj.org --- PARROT FEVER is a companion piece to the film installation ‘to the wire’ (Hosta Projects). Commissioned by NI Mental Health Arts Festival & Hosta Projects. If you have any questions or feedback about this Echoes audio walk experience please contact John D'Arcy (j.darcy@qub.ac.uk)

Belfast Before Flood

Belfast Before Flood

Here in the year 2222, we often wonder what Belfast was like 200 years ago. Come and see for yourself in ‘Belfast Before Flood’ - the new living museum based on the forgotten Belfast of 2022. Using authentic early 21st Century technology and language, this experience is guaranteed to be both educational and entertaining for anyone interested in what life was like before the Great Submersion. Using the quaint antique of technology of mobile smartphones, ‘Belfast Before Flood’ provides a location-activated audio walk that shares the stories of how and why Belfast was the way it was in 2022. And more importantly, how it changed in the intervening years leading to our present day in the year 2222. So celebrate 200 years since the era of peak knowledge and the beginning of the end of life as they knew it in 'Belfast Before Flood'. To begin, tap 'Stream Walk'. Once you see the map, pay attention to your location via the bright blue dot - if you can't see it on the map, tap 'Locate Me' or the small arrow button. You can then find the audio tour locations at the 'sound zones' - the pale blue shapes on the map. The circular shape marks the first sound zone. You can get a hint of the content for a sound zone by tapping its marker on the map. Once you enter a sound zone the audio tour commentary will start, and play through while you remain in the zone. Remember to be aware of your surroundings and passing traffic. Please listen through headphones and turn on your phone's WiFi to help improve your location accuracy. Tap the download button on the walk-in advance to prevent issues with mobile data streaming.
