Songs of Hope, Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival 2023

room 6 ECHOES

A song cycle of hope located within a field recorded and sonically manipulated soundscape, including words, songs and music. Contemporary writers have responded to the poem “Hope" is the thing with Feathers by Emily Dickinson. Laura has set the words for voices, piano, instruments and pre-recorded sounds. These musical echoes are presented in an audio walk. Free to access by mobile phone and headphones in specific locations using GPS location software echoes xyz.com (software to be downloaded in advance). Laura will be presenting this as a guided ticketed walk on the launch day, 5.00pm 29th August. Meeting outside entrance to Cockpit Theatre, Gateforth Street, the walk will take 60 - 75 minutes. It will be available to access via mobile devices for the duration of the festival. Featuring soprano Gweneth Ann Rand and piano by Allyson Devenish. Music by Laura Reid. Words: Ahed Al Hamwi, Katie Colombus, Oge Nwosu, Teresa Howard. Responses to the poem range from the personification of Hope by Ahed Al Hamwi, optimistic reflections recalling images of nature by Teresa Howard and Katie Colombus, to stark realities of sustaining hope in challenging circumstances by Oge Nwosu. Each one has a unique perspective. Age Rating: All ages, but mostly adults. Content Advisory: to see content advisories for Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival 2023 shows, click here. London in Song

London in Song

London is full of different street singers we usually meet them 'by chance': we pass by, we are attracted, we stop and enjoy, then we leave. But what would it be like if we could record all these different wonderful songs through an audio map? At the same time it's a sustainable audio map, whenever I come across new songs on the streets of London I can record them and upload them to the audio map. As time goes on the map will become richer and richer and when the coverage reaches a certain point, no matter where you go in London, when you open this audio map you will hear someone who has sung here before.

London Open Form Pavilion of Air

London Open Form Pavilion of Air

Details: https://www.recordedfields.net/installations/london-open-form-pavilion-of-air/ The London Open Form Pavilion of Air audiowork is a floating roof of sound, triggered by GPS and accessed via a smartphone, headphones and the echoes.xyz app. One of 15 locations in 9 countries in the Open Form Pavilion of Air series, inspired by Polish architects Oskar & Zofia Hansen’s “Open Form” architectural concept, they use sound and site-mapping to offer a playful renewal and reframing of public space as an essential place of engagement for the community. The Pavilion's area takes the form of a 160 x 160 metre arrow pointing west to Ireland & the sunset. Invisibly occupying part of the Gardens, itself once a King’s playground, the work's concept echoes & reframes the fading colonial notion of a "... vast [British] empire on which the sun never sets" (the words of British colonial administrator Earl George Macartney in his "An Account of Ireland in 1773 by a Late Chief Secretary of that Kingdom"). By walking through different zones in the specific area by the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens while using your mobile phone, the Echoes app and headphones, you become a participatory listener producing a composition in real-time. Your navigation creates a unique choreography via GPS, combining and changing sounds mapped in the Gardens through the app. Hear the park and its context become transformed by the many sounds forming this floating acoustic architecture, revealing an immersive, profoundly spatial and physical experience. The Pavilion has no visible presence outside the app and can only be accessed and enjoyed on-site in Kensington Gardens adjacent to the Serpentine Gallery (on the opposite side to the Serpentine Pavilion).
