An interactive sound map of Manchester & Salford cinematic history. Hear evocative recollections of the many flea pits and picture houses in these two cities. Now hidden in plain sight, this walk consists entirely of cinemas long since closed to the public ensuring memories of screenings past are kept alive for future generations. This tour is suitable for listening whilst walking the route or can be enjoyed in its entirety from the comfort of your own home. Time to complete walk in person - 60-90 mins approx Accessibility - Although Manchester is well paved and signposted, the walk will take the participant from one side of town to the other. This may not be suitable for those with motor or visual impairments. However, the walk is designed so that it can be completed from home as a virtual experience. IDEAL START AT BIMM INSTITUTE ENTRANCE (FAULKNER STREET) You are an audionaut fresh out of Audionaut Academy. In your hand you have your cybernetic audio interface. This displays your location, objectives, and PDA. You are on a pilgrimage to find the Essence of Authenticity, which is hidden somewhere in Manchester 2077. Mandy, the city's integrated AI, will be your guide. Which way will you walk?

A Meeting Place | 会议地点 layers original sound compositions and field recordings with photographs and oral histories from the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Art's (CFCCA) archive, in which interviewees talk of their migrant experience, their identities as people of Chinese heritage living in the UK, memories of Manchester's Chinatown and Chinese festivals, and CFCCA’s first venue at 36 Charlotte Street. The audio for this work has been mixed in 360-degree binaural audio, providing a fully immersive experience that sonically animates the archival materials and creating the sensation that different sounds are being emitted from all directions around the listener’s head.

This sound walk through central Manchester aims to reveal and highlight the presence and activity of wild nature in the city, particularly in the form of plants, trees and waterways that exist in forgotten or in-between spaces, often in spite of the human activity that dominates or surrounds them. The walk takes around 50 minutes to complete. It is accessible to wheelchair users and a transcript is included below. From the front of the library, turn right, following the curve of the building and sit on the second large wooden bench if you can, facing the entrance of the Midland Hotel.
