Multicultural friendships, education, science and space travel: the leitmotifs of socialist iconography preached the great potential of its people and brought colour and texture to the drab prefabricated concrete slabs of the socialist cityscape. Architecture was the ultimate articulation of GDR planning principles and cultural policy, as a medium through which the state could disseminate their power. Kunst Am Bau, as the material manifestation of the overlap between politics, culture and social life, became an integral component of socialist city plan- ning and cultural policy. Often dismissed as mere political propaganda, Kunst Am Bau also represents optimism in a turbulent period and dreams of sharing a harmonious existence with the world. This guided jaunt traces the ideals and realities of GDR society through Kunst Am Bau in and around East Berlin’s most prestigious address, Alexanderplatz. In the process of admiring the few remaining examples and themes of this rapidly fading artistic form, we will take a critical look at the disparity between socialist life as advertised and the state of things as they actually existed, the history of the socialist building and cultural policies, and the present day conditions they face as remainders and reminders of the socialist regime. This geolocated soundwalk is part of a series of In situ sonic practices that explore the possibilities of amphibious corporality and mimetic language within a listen-word-world making. Water makes objects slippery and wet, but what about subjects?. In terms of having a different perspective on environmental dialectics, the narratives and memories of water allow us to sonically explore the interconnection of local ecologies through mimetical human-nature dynamics. Audiodrom ist ein 15-minütiger binauraler Audiowalk über das Velodrom-Gelände in Berlin. Das Velodrom-Gelände ist ein skurriler Ort. Von breiten Straßen und grauen Wohn- und Büroblöcken umgeben wirkt das grüne Plateau mit den Apfelbäumen und dem wildem hohen Gras wie eine surreale Oase. Die Teilnehmer werden von einer Sprecherin einzeln durch das Gelände geführt und erleben dabei ungewöhnliche akustische Situationen, welche die Wahrnehmung irritieren und Realität mit Fiktion verschwimmen lassen. Audiodrom is a 15 minute binaural audio walk through Berlin’s Velodrome Park, an impressively singular spatial complex surrounded by tall grey buildings and imposing housing blocks. In this sterile environment, an artificial green plateau with apple trees and wild high grass appear out of nowhere, like a surreal oasis. The participants of the audio walk discover this place through an acoustic approach. They are guided by the speaker’s voice as they walk through the park, finding some peculiar acoustic situations which irritate the perseption and blur the line between fantasy and reality. SONO-SORO [WALKS] is a collaborative and decentralized soundwalk database that brings together the audio recordings of female-identifying, two-spirit, non-binary and trans individuals about their experience of walking in urban space at night. This digital database of nocturnal walks locates intersectional feminist agencies from cities around the world.
