Penlee House Gallery & Museum

This tour was produced by the John Daniel Centre and Penlee House Gallery & Museum as part of a partnership project in 2019. It was created to explore Penzance’s history through the photography collection at Penlee House. The ten images were selected and researched by a group from the John Daniel Centre; you can visit the locations where these photographs were taken to compare the photographs to the views today. This tour was created for Penzance Selects 2019, a community-curated exhibition held at Penlee House Gallery & Museum from 23 November 2019 to 4 January 2020.

Penzance Selects- Introduction

One of the hidden gems of the collections at Penlee House is the photography collection of around 15,000 images, mostly of the people and places of West Cornwall.
A group from the John Daniel Centre, which supports adults who have learning difficulties, were keen to explore the historic photographs of Penzance, comparing the town as it is now to how it appears in early photography.
The group visited Penlee House to see the original photographs in the stores. They then selected photographs showing landmarks and important places in the town and researched their history for the display in this gallery.
They also worked with artist Melanie Young to create a large map of Penzance which highlights the sites where some of the old photographs were taken.
Their artwork and research have been used as the basis for a guided trail around the town, available as a paper map and as a digital audio trail, which the group have narrated. Both of these allow visitors to take the collections with them out into Penzance and to explore the town then and now.

Penzance Selects- Penlee House Gallery & Museum

Penlee house was built in 1865 for a wealthy Penzance miller and merchant John Branwell. Penlee house originally contained three reception rooms, a dining room, breakfast room with a scullery, kitchen, butlers pantry, dairy and office. The first floor was approached by a formal staircase which is still in existence. There were seven bedrooms on the first floor. In 1946 the house and surrounding estate was purr chased by public subscription to be a war memorial and would house the towns historic and art collection.

Penzance Selects- Penzance School of Art

Penzance school of art Morrab road was built in 1881. And was the first art school west of Bristol. Oscar Wilde visited the building whilst in Penzance on a lecture tour in 1883.

Penzance Selects- St John's Hall

St John’s Hall was finished in 1867 and is built from Lamorna granite. The top step is one of the largest pieces of granite ever quarried.

Penzance Selects- Causewayhead

Halfway up Causewayhead is the Savoy Cinema, said to be the longest continuously running cinema in the UK having first opened its doors in 1912.

Penzance Selects- Market House

The Lloyds bank building in market Jew street is called the market house. It was completed in 1838 and was originally built to house a market and the guildhall. The basement below the guildhall originally contained cells for prisoners and the first floor was used as a grammar school. The building was used as a corn exchange and also as a theatre. The building is now occupied by Lloyd’s bank. There is a statue of Sir Humphry Davy outside the building. He invented the miner's safety lamp.

Penzance Selects- Chapel Street

Chapel street gets its name from the chapel of St Anthony. The Admiral Benbow pub was named after the seventeenth-century Admiral John Benbow. There is a statue of a smuggler lying astride the roof with a musket in his hand.

Penzance Selects- Jubilee Pool

The jubilee pool was designed by in the early 1930s and was opened in 1935 in the year of King George V’s silver jubilee. The pool was popular for 50 years but by 1992 the pool had become dilapidated. Fortunately, an architect John Clarke formed the jubilee pool association to restore the pool. In 2014 severe storms hit Cornwall and the pool suffered serious structural damage and was closed again for restoration.

Penzance Selects- Train Station

The station was opened by the West Cornwall Railway on 11th March 1852. A fire in 1876 destroyed the goods shed and the wooden passenger building. These were replaced by the current station in 1879. The total cost was around fifteen thousand pounds, equivalent to one and a half million pounds in today’s money.

The Egyptian House in Chapel Street was built for John Lavin in 1835. It was originally a geological museum and shop.

Penzance Selects- St Mary's Church

The present church was built between 1833 and 1835 and was opened on 15th November 1835. There has been a church on this site since the 12th Century.

Start at the entrance to Burthallan Lane, and walk along Burthallan Lane to the coastal path, down and around to Clodgy Point, along to Porthmeor Beach and back up Porthmeor hill. You will hear 16 musical variations based around a single theme composed for this walk, each one triggered as you move along the route. A musical accompaniment to your daily walk. All I suggest is that you follow the route and when you hear music, perhaps stop and let yourself stare a while at anything your eyes happen to rest upon. Then continue walking along the route until the next musical interlude and so on to the end. Please get in touch and let me know how it goes. The pieces are mostly 40 secs long, apart from the longer piano pieces that are between 1m30secs and 3m30secs. If you have a little speaker that connects to your phone, that’s ideal- either bluetooth or wired connection. You can then listen to the music out loud and amongst the natural environmental sounds, or if you prefer use a pair of headphones. Once paired and with boots laced up and coat on, go on the walk. The app needs to be open, but the phone screen can be at sleep and in your pocket- Unless you want the use the phone to follow the route. You will hear 16 musical variations based around a single theme composed for this walk. A musical accompaniment to your daily walk. All I suggest is that you follow the route and when you hear music, perhaps stop and let yourself stare a while at anything your eyes happen to rest upon. When the music finishes continue walking along the route until the next musical interlude and so on to the end. Please get in touch and let me know how it goes. The pieces are mostly 40 secs long, apart from the 3 main piano pieces that are between 1m30secs and 3m30secs. You can either wear some headphones if walking alone, or if with others maybe bring a portable speaker paired to your phone, and listen all together, letting the music fill the space as you stop to share the break. Even if walking alone, consider using a small portable speaker. The idea is that the music is heard alongside the natural environmental sounds rather than blocking it out.
