Dis/Locating Cultures of Equality

Dialogue recorded during SW Theatre SA rehearsals and performances interweaves with and contextualises excerpts from an interview with GlobalGRACE researcher Phoebe Kisubi about the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic in South Africa – highlighting both the urgency and ethical challenges of conducting research during that time.

A mediation between the chaotic noise that people passing by may perceive of the construction site, and the meaning that environment holds for the women working within it, expressed through song. Interspersed, research lead Tanzina Choudhury explains the immediate and long-term impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on women construction workers in Sylhet.

Exhibition curator Siobhan McGuirk reads 'Motion.Stop.' The poem was written to colleagues during lockdown and following news that the UK government cut to the international aid budget would severely impact the GlobalGRACE project, forcing cost-saving changes to our plans.

The postcards referenced can be seen in the windows of the Richard Hoggart Building.

Ambient sounds recorded inside the gilded halls of the UK's most prominent museums and galleries play across the green and airy outdoors. This dislocation is punctuated by quotes from women who work in UK museums, interviewed about their experiences working in a sector where the somatic (bodily) norm of power and influence is white, male and able-bodied. The words of these ‘space invaders’ have been re-recorded by actors to maintain anonymity.

An audio journey forwards and backwards in time, as ambient sounds of Galpão Bela Maré recorded during MASCULINITIES in DIALOGUE in 2021 cross over with reflections from NGO lead Isabela Souza on local institutions’mobilising in response to coronavirus, recorded in late 2020.

Using ambient and recorded sounds, conversations, and music this soundscape is a rumination on migratory journeys taken through from and through Chiapas, across fields, cities and deserts; in and between transit and border zones; by foot, train, buses and trucks. It is an assertion of the right to migrate, and of the right to be able to remain in the places we call home.
