Our Heroes in the Air - Hayden Palmer

The world is full of interesting and beautiful things, not all of them overt or celebrated. Take a moment to slow down, enjoy the things you wouldn't otherwise notice, and see the world in a new way. This walk has no start or end point, nor do you need to visit every location to enjoy it. Set your own pace and visit the locations you feel like visiting.

This walk is a personal reflection of time framed around nature, life, death and the passing of my first and only dog Vader. This work was designed to be a personal reflection of time and how the passing of time can create both hardships and beautiful moments. This walk is designed to be taken at approximately 5km/h (not too slow but not racing through), starting on the walkway surrounded by trees and ending looking at the university lake. Each Echo contains 30 seconds of audio and it is recommended you pass through each with a small amount of sound overlap, spending approximately 25 seconds in each echo would be an ideal pace, this will allow for a seamless audio visual experience. The last slide contains an instruction for you as well as a recap of all that came before it. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters upon which the University's campuses are located. Immerse yourself in the diverse experience of the local soccer field. Follow the story of the field- from listening to the field's sounds while it's vacant early in the morning, to the sounds of the surrounding creek, to training and sitting in the goals, to ending the experience with cheering on your team at a night game. Actively listen to the various sounds that this environment harbours throughout different hours of the day. All audio recordings and images are produced from the location of Jubilee Park in Palmwoods, Queensland. The echoes sound walk experience is located on the sports field at the University of the Sunshine Coast, in order to enhance the immersive experience of a sporting atmosphere.

Welcome to this immersive experience that invites you to explore the Mooloolah River National Park, which is merely 3 km away. This experience aims to plunge you into a wet hike through this beautiful bushland. These echoes are located on clear footpaths, to ensure accessibility, and can be enjoyed while not in map view. This hike does have a sense of time and is formed to be told in order, with the first echo "Arrive" located on the path between H block and E block. However, the nature soundscapes can be enjoyed in any order. Grab your device, turn up your volume to your comfort level, and enjoy a rainy day in one of our beautiful natural parks. I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Mooloolah River National Park, where the experience will take place, the Kabi Kabi peoples. I would also like to pay my respects to their Elders, past and present.

Spend the morning with nature. Feel the golden sun on your skin as the sun rises over the sea and peeks through the trees. The wildlife awakens as the light brightens but the rising sun. As you get closer to the top, hear the mellow wind rustling the treetop leaves. As you approach the top, enjoy the view, breath in the fresh air, and feel the world beneath you. The SistaLAKESeries is a creative endeavour to connect the lakes of the Sunshine Coast by juxtaposing their sounds and imagery onto three Echo walks in proximity around Sippy Downs’ upper lake. Sounds By Light is a different approach to how we perceive sound and imagery through interpretive digital art. This pieces’ aim was to capture different sound recordings from a variety of natural environments, along with photography from the same locations.

‘Shared Country’ is focused on Australian fauna and the land in which we share with them. As an international student, I find Australia's diverse and vast nature fascinating. From the common rainbow lorikeet to the more elusive black cockatoo, ‘Shared Country’ displays a range of sound collected from various locations across the Sunshine Coast.
