This walk traces a journey through sound, moving between human activity and natural environments across the Sippy Downs campus. Beginning at the threshold of space, the listener is guided through moments of movement, interaction, and sensory overload before transitioning into quieter states of attention and awareness. The experience reveals how place is shaped through both presence and perception.

Threshold

A point of arrival. Sound remains distant and unresolved, holding the listener just outside the environment. This threshold marks the transition into place, where awareness begins but connection has not yet formed.

Crossing Paths

Two paths intersect briefly. Footsteps approach, pass, and disappear again, leaving only the trace of movement behind. Presence is momentary, connection fleeting. The space begins to reveal itself not as static, but as something lived through motion and encounter.

Emerging Presence

The space begins to fill. Voices linger in the distance, footsteps continue, and the environment breathes around them. What was once a simple path now reveals layers of occupation and subtle interaction. Presence is no longer isolated — it gathers, overlapping and coexisting.

Overstimulated

The space becomes saturated. Voices overlap, devices hum, and movement intensifies. Attention fragments as multiple layers compete for presence. What once felt open now feels crowded, loud, and demanding — a moment of sensory overload within the everyday.

Release

The pressure lifts. Sound opens into a quieter, more spacious environment where movement slows and attention softens. Natural rhythms take precedence, offering a moment of release from the density of human activity. The space feels wider, calmer, and more breathable.

Focus

Attention narrows. After moving through space and sound, the focus shifts toward a single, quiet moment. Detail replaces movement, inviting a slower, more deliberate way of noticing. The environment is no longer expansive, but intimate and precise.

Coexistence

The environment settles into a shared state. Natural and human elements occupy the same space, no longer competing but existing alongside one another. Attention expands again, recognising both layers at once without prioritising either.

As Is

The environment is revealed without separation. Natural and human elements exist together as they are, without resolution or hierarchy. The space is neither quiet nor chaotic, but balanced in its reality — a final moment of awareness that holds both worlds at once.

As you walk, you’ll be immersed in an intricate soundscape composed of field recordings gathered through the roots of trees. These recordings capture the hidden melodies that resonate beneath our feet and all around us—the subtle murmur of roots sucking up water, rustle of leaves, the pulse of insects, the calls of birds, and rain drops playing the trees like drums. This work offers a glimpse into a world not shaped by human hands but inhabited by countless beings whose lives unfold in parallel to our own. It asks you to slow down, to tune in, and to listen differently—not for us, but for them. Their World is both an artwork and an act of reciprocity. It reflects the artist’s deep love for the natural world and the belief that attentive, respectful listening can shift how we relate to place. In walking this path, you’re invited to let go of expectation and open yourself to the vitality, complexity, and beauty of the more-than-human world that surrounds us—always speaking, if we choose to hear it.

When we think of exploring nature, we don’t often consider the human element as part of that environment. This immersive sound walk takes you on an exploratory journey of the similarities between human and environmental sounds, with audio recorded along the stretch between Noosa Spit, along the Coastal Track in the National Park right to the point of Hell’s Gates. Take your time to listen to these sounds and explore your own connections within the environments that you inhabit. For the best experience, start your walk at the intersection past the P8 carpark approaching the Brasserie, follow the sounds along past J Block and the Library, heading towards D and E Block to finish your walk looking out towards the lake nearing H Block. Take your time with these sounds, they vary in length between 30 seconds to 1 minute. There are benches and seats along this path so you can pause and enjoy your walk! Acknowledgment of Country: I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which this immersive experience was created and located. I acknowledge the Gubbi Gubbi people and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

Hello and welcome to my Campus Foodscapes walk. The allocated path will guide you through every food venue available on campus and will let you immerse in familiar spaces through sound, revealing how environment, movement and student life come together to shape experiences at the university. I would like to acknowledge that this project takes place on the traditional lands at the University of the Sunshine Coast Sippy Downs, of the Kabi Kabi people. I acknowledge their continuing connection to land, waters and community, and pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

The land that hosts the UniSC Sippy Downs campus is alive with sound. Connection to Campus is an opportunity to appreciate the natural environment that makes this area unique. Tips for enjoying this walk: Begin on the path between H & I Block, heading toward D & E Block.The walk is designed for a slow pace and there are benches along the way should you like to sit or need more time to finish the audio. The sounds will repeat on a loop until you leave the circle.

The World of Animals - Moegi Suga

Highly recommend using headphones to get the full experience. 'The World of Animals' shows the different worlds that are close to you, but you might not realise. This provides the sounds that animals might hear. This consists of six themes: Tadpoles, Kangaroos, Swamphens, Microbats, Ants and Possums. Recordings were mostly carried out at the spots on campus where I encountered each animal, and the GPS locations were placed at almost the same spots as the recording spots. Enjoy the world of animals by comparing the sounds you usually hear!
