Designer: David Clendining (Canadian artist and sculptor) Commemoration: Honours animals that served alongside their human comrades in war. These animals included mules, horses, carrier pigeons, and dogs.

Notable Fact: It is symbolically set beside the South African War Memorial, a battle for which Canada supplied 50,000 horses for mounted troops.

Date: 1845

Initiator: The British National Art Fund.

Designer: Sir Charles Barry (British architect)

Commemoration: Honours the memory of Lieutenant Colonel John By, builder of the Rideau Canal (1826–1832) and founder of Bytown (now Ottawa).

Notable Fact: The fountain was originally one of a pair which stood in Trafalgar Square in London, England, from 1843 to 1948. The architect, Sir Charles Berry also designed the Palace of Westminster in the 19th century.

Initiator: Polish Home Army Ex-Servicemen's Association of Canada

Designer: Tadeusz Ślesicki of Montreal

Commemoration: Canadian airmen who flew with the Polish Home Army during the Second World War

Notable Fact: Only seven of the airmen named on the monument were actually killed on support missions to the Polish Home Army (PHA).

Initiator: A public initiative engendered by children

Designer: Hamilton MacCarthy (sculptor)

Commemoration: Canadian volunteers who died in the South African War (Boer War) of 1899–1902

Notable Fact: The monument was funded through the efforts of 30,000 local children.

Initiator: Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry

Designer: Don Begg (sculptor)

Commemoration: Brigadier Andrew Hamilton Gault, founder of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

Notable Fact: The unit was named Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) after the daughter of the Duke of Connaught, Governor General of Canada.

Date: 1939

Initiator: The Government of Canada

Designer: Vernon March of Farnborough, Kent, England

Commemoration: Canadian Armed Forces personnel who have served Canada in time of war in the cause of peace and freedom--past, present and future.

Notable Fact: Vernon March was helped by his six brothers and his sister who completed the work after his untimely death in 1930. They molded the full size figures in clay, then cast them in plaster and finally made the bronze figures in their own foundry.

Initiator: Valiants Foundation, Canadian Heritage, and the Government of Canada

Designer: Marlene Hilton Moore and John McEwen

Commemoration: Fourteen single figures and their role in the following periods of Canada's military history: the French Regime, the American Revolution, The War of 1812, and the First and Second World Wars.

Notable Fact: Sculptor Marlene Hilton Moore invented a unique sculpture process that included body casts, using clothing as templates, traditional wax, carving of each portrait in clay to achieve a realistic interpretation.
