Columbia Festival of the Arts

ARTsites takes the artwork out of galleries and places it in public spaces all across Howard County. Every year, these head-turning art displays create new visual landmarks and increase the community’s access to the arts. Location: Gary J. Arthur Community Center 2400 State Highway Route 97, Cooksville Hanna Jubran’s Nebula depicts the motion in nature. Its circular form can be interpreted as space, with the Milky Way, comets, and other heavenly objects. He is condensing time and space, which are ever expanding. The viewer is invited to gaze, interact, and experience this sculpture.

Orange Twist reflects Richard Pitt’s desire to activate the imagination with sculptures that create a moving dialogue with the environment. He believes sculpture can make a place important, which, in return, makes the sculpture important.

Location: Howard County Government, George Howard Building 3430 Courthouse Dive, Ellicott City Brushed aluminum; 2’11”x4’2”x6’
Beautifully situated in the tall sea grass at the George Howard building, Labyrinth III suggests a continuous contemplative journey connecting the past, present, and future.

Location: Corporate Office Properties Trust 6711 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia Black locust wood; 4’x4’x11’
Charlie Brouwer uses wood-one of the most ordinary and familiar of materials- making his work approachable and friendly. He also chooses uplifting themes for his work. Most statues are monuments to a particular person, who is generally perceived as special. Ordinary Person is a monument to every one of us.

Location: James and Anne Robinson Nature Center 6692 Cedar Lane, Columbia Wood, found objects; 1’5”x3’5”x6’
A nature center is the perfect home for Insect House, a functional sculpture which provides habitat for beneficial insects and native solitary bees. A variety of content is placed in each of the 12 hexagonal structures including bamboo, hollow sticks, rope, straw, pottery, and other organic and inorganic matter.

The Pleiades is a representation of the star cluster in the constellation of Taurus. The simplicity and serenity of the sculpture provide a reprieve from the rush of modernity.

Location: The Arc of Howard County 11735 Homewood Drive, Ellicott City Steel, MDO board, UV links, epoxy resin, hardware, and black silicone; 3’x3’x10’
In the midst of a personal creative renaissance, Kirk Seese is always looking for opportunities to experiment with new materials. His fabrication technique developed creating themed climbing walls inspired him to expand his work into sculpture. Pluma Sculptura, aka The Feather was his debut sculpture design.

Location: Howard County Public School System Administration Building 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City Cast iron, stainless steel; 1’x2’x12’
Once perceived as ‘balls of fire’ trailing sparks and flames are now understood to be comprised of a collection of meteor-like stones, aggregates and reflective ice. These old and new ideas about comets led Billingsley to combine the abundant natural element iron with a man-made alloy of iron, stainless steel, to create a symbolic comet that is shiny and bright and was born in a fiery furnace.

Location: Howard County General Hospital 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia Powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel; 3’x3’x8’
A bouquet of flowers is given with love and best wishes. A painting of the morning sky describes a time of renewed energy. These uplifting symbols are combined and set on a pedestal, as a signpost for hope.

Location: Columbia Association, Slayton House 10400 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia Steel, MDO board, clear acrylic, UV links, epoxy resin, hardware; 3’x3’x10’
As he did with with Pluma Sculptura, Kirk Seese brought together a variety of materials for this colorful sculpture. With its translucent swiveling lense, Magnify is an inviting and interactive piece.

Location: Howard County Library System, Central Branch 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia Fabricated steel and found objects; 4’2”x6’7”x7’4”
For Karl Saar inspiration is lurking everywhere, whether in nature, pop culture, or even a found metal part. Mosegaard the dragon is comprised of a variety of found parts, including sprockets, hooks, ring gears, and an old oxygen tank. Named after one of Saar’s Danish neighbors, whose name translates loosely to “Moss Farmer”.

Location: Howard Community College (near the Horowitz Center and West Parking Garage) 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia Wood; 3’x3’x9’
An intentional misspelling of virtual isolation, Futural Eyesoulation is wordplay on the present future of communication, where distancing/remote platforms procure human isolation. The acquisition of information through computerized imagery composed of pixels replaces knowledge gleaned from tangible reality through the experience of physical place and space, making physical being a byproduct of the past and unnecessary for existing in the new age.
