Highly recommend using headphones to get the full experience. 'The World of Animals' shows the different worlds that are close to you, but you might not realise. This provides the sounds that animals might hear. This consists of six themes: Tadpoles, Kangaroos, Swamphens, Microbats, Ants and Possums. Recordings were mostly carried out at the spots on campus where I encountered each animal, and the GPS locations were placed at almost the same spots as the recording spots. Enjoy the world of animals by comparing the sounds you usually hear!

The World Tadpoles

You will hear the sound of a tadpole and probably a snail scratching the hydrophone, as well as the insects and birds, and also the beginning of rain from all underwater during the daytime. The recording was edited to increase the sound between 1000 Hz and 4000 Hz, which is the estimated sensitive hearing range for tadpoles.

The World of Kangaroos

This sound was recorded by microphones in each ear of a kangaroo head made by a 3D printer to record the sound that kangaroos might hear. It was placed in front of kangaroos in the morning at this location. You will hear the sound of scratching bodies, pulling and eating grass, sneezing, and the voice of woman who talk to kangaroos. The recording was edited to increase the sound between 1 kHz and 18 kHz, especially between 2 kHz and 3.5 kHz, that the frequency that is thought kangaroos be sensitive to.

The world of Swamphens

You will hear the swamphen’s call, walking in the water, walking in the grass, scratching their bodies and other birds flying over your head. This was recorded at dawn when the swamphens are active. There were some swamphens and lots of other birds at the lake. The microphone was placed at about the same height as the swamphen. The sound between 1 kHz and 4 kHz, which is thought to be the sensitive frequency for birds, was increased.

The world of Microbats

You will hear the ultrasonic echolocation of microbats that was recorded at this location and in Ilkley, along with the sounds of this location at night. The frequency of the ultrasonic echolocation was lowered to make it possible for humans to hear. The picture shows the bat call.

The World of Ants

You will hear the ants’ footsteps and the tree sucking water. This was recorded during the daytime after a day of heavy rain. The hydrophone was placed on the wet soil at the base of an eucalyptus tree. Ants were probably Golden Tailed Spiny Ants, and they were walking by and on the hydrophone. The picture is looking up the tree from the ground, where the ants were, to simulate their vision when they are climbing the tree.

The World of Possums

You will hear the sound of the branch that the possum moved, recorded at Ilkley at night time in the tree under the ring-tailed possum. Sounds over 15 kHz is sensitive to possums, therefore, the recorded audio was also amplified at this bandwidth to mimic what a possum is likely to hear and the picture was taken to simulate the possum’s point of view from the tree.

When we think of exploring nature, we don’t often consider the human element as part of that environment. This immersive sound walk takes you on an exploratory journey of the similarities between human and environmental sounds, with audio recorded along the stretch between Noosa Spit, along the Coastal Track in the National Park right to the point of Hell’s Gates. Hello and welcome to my immersive experience. This experience has been created to expose the diversity of sounds, that are naturally present within a wildlife corridor in suburbia. This is in comparison to a residential estate, which has been cleared of native vegetation and has had a designed park area included in the development. This experience will take you to the depths of the wildlife corridor where you will hear an array of bird calls and critters. Having natural corridors, within suburbia, is a valuable asset to both the environment and people’s wellbeing. To appreciate the experience please start at the initial echo (blue circle on your phone map) which is located at the end of Block E. Turn your volume up to a comfortable level. Take your time to wander through the echoes and as you enter each one, tap the blue circle to display an image and short description. Enjoy! I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the USC campus sits. I recognise and pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my immersive experience. This walk was prepared for the Des304 task 1 Sensing Environments course. The sounds used in this experience were collected from the natural environment of Mooloolah River National Park. A relaxing soundscape of nature is set within a number of buildings at the University of the Sunshine Coast so students can get away from the urban environment and experience nature's sounds. It will be possible for you to hear various species of birds, bugs, and even sounds from an underwater environment.
